A morning in Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City — the largest imperial palace complex in the world. In the afternoon, the historic hutong lanes, a visit to a traditional courtyard home, and a quiet boat ride on Houhai Lake. And for dinner — authentic Beijing dumplings at a long-standing family restaurant by the lake, the kind that only serves what was made that morning.

We take the high-speed train from Beijing to Xi'an — four and a half hours city centre to city centre, at over 300 km/h. In the afternoon we go up onto the ancient city walls, which survive intact all the way around, and cycle them in the last of the light.

An early departure to the Terracotta Army — thousands of life-sized warriors, each with an individual face, that guarded the first emperor's tomb for two thousand years. In the afternoon, the Muslim Quarter: one of the best street-food markets in China. An evening Tang Dynasty show.

A short flight south to Zhangjiajie and a transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, an unhurried walk through the old Tujia town — an ethnic minority with its own wooden architecture, music and cooking. An early evening, ahead of two full days in the mountains.

We ride the world's longest cable car straight from the town centre to the summit of Tianmen Mountain, walk the glass skywalk clinging to the cliff face, and reach Heaven's Gate — an enormous natural arch through the mountain. A full day, with no flight to rush for. In the evening we head down to the 72 Buildings complex at the foot of Tianmen — an illuminated night quarter of fantasy architecture, street food and street performances.

We descend on the Bailong lift, the tallest outdoor lift in the world, cross the sky bridge, and finish with an easy walk along the Golden Whip Stream on the valley floor. A full day in the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon: across the glass bridge suspended three hundred metres above the valley floor, down to the canyon bottom and an easy walk along the stream between the waterfalls. A free afternoon in town, and a last evening in the mountains.

A free morning in town and a midday flight to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province and the food capital of China. The afternoon is spent in People's Park — a traditional teahouse, a bowl of jasmine tea, and a traditional ear cleaning for anyone brave enough. The real Sichuan hotpot dinner in the evening.

An early morning at the panda base, at their feeding hour, then on to the old Kuanzhai alleys. In the afternoon, the hot springs complex near Dujiangyan — mineral pools under the open sky and a traditional Chinese massage. The pools welcome children; treatments are adults only. In the evening, the Sichuan opera with the famous face-changing act.

A morning flight back to Beijing. The last day is free for markets and final shopping, with day-use rooms at the hotel, a group farewell dinner, and an organised evening transfer to the airport.

We cross the border into Macau for a full day: Senado Square and the Portuguese quarter, the ruins of St Paul's, egg tarts straight out of the oven, and the new Macau of towers and casinos. In the evening, a celebration dinner at SW Steakhouse in the Wynn Palace, overlooking the fountain show — one of the most talked-about dining experiences in Macau. For something more local, the alternative is a traditional Macanese-Portuguese restaurant in Taipa.

We cross the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the longest sea crossing in the world — fifty-five kilometres over and under the water. In the afternoon we go up to Victoria Peak for sunset, and in the evening watch the Symphony of Lights from the waterfront.

A whole day in the city: the Star Ferry between the island and Kowloon, Wong Tai Sin Temple, a proper dim sum lunch, and a free afternoon for shopping. The night markets of Kowloon in the evening.

A free final morning, a farewell meal, and the transfer to Hong Kong airport for the flight home. We land in Israel the following morning.

A short flight to Chongqing, the dizzying mountain city built in layers above two rivers. A first look around in the afternoon, and in the evening the Hongyadong quarter — a whole city of lanterns on the cliff face.

A last morning in the city — the metro line that runs straight through an apartment block, and the view from the riverbank. In the afternoon we board the ship at Chaotianmen port, settle into our cabins, and sail downriver overnight.

A first full day on the river: breakfast on deck, a shore excursion at one of the historic settlements along the bank, and later in the day we sail through Qutang Gorge — the narrowest and most dramatic of the three. The captain's welcome party in the evening.

We sail through the last of the gorges, Xiling, and arrive at the Three Gorges Dam — the largest engineering project in the world, including a passage through the ship lift. We disembark at Yichang around midday and continue south to Zhangjiajie.

In the afternoon, Yu Garden and the old lanes around it: a classical Chinese garden with goldfish ponds, bridges and dragon's-beard candy. In the evening we head to the Bund — the illuminated Pudong skyline across the river, and a short river cruise.

A full day at Shanghai Disneyland — the largest and newest park in Asia, with the biggest Disney castle in the world. Tickets are booked in advance, we go in as the gates open, and anyone who prefers can head back to the hotel early. The return in the evening is flexible, whatever suits each family.

A flight west to Zhangjiajie — the complete opposite of Shanghai. In the afternoon we head to a family hot springs complex nearby — pools at a range of temperatures that suit children too, and quiet areas for the parents. The spa treatments and massages on site are adults only. A relaxed evening and an early night before the days in the mountains.

For families who prefer something less formal, the alternative is a traditional Macanese-Portuguese restaurant in Taipa serving the dishes the city is famous for.

A final day at Ocean Park — a theme park and vast aquarium on a clifftop above the sea, with a cable car that runs across the bay. A farewell meal in the afternoon, last-minute shopping, and the transfer to Hong Kong airport.

A new high-speed train into the mountains of northern Sichuan — an hour and a half instead of a full day on the road. Arrival, settling in, and a first taste of the valley in the late afternoon.

A full day in what many consider China's most beautiful reserve: lakes in shades of turquoise and sapphire, wide waterfalls and alpine forest. We move between the sites on the reserve's shuttles, at our own pace.

A day at Yellow Dragon Valley — terraces of golden mineral pools at 3,000 metres, with a cable car up and an easy walking route down.

A last easy morning and transfer to the airport. The flight home is relatively short from the south — and the little ones come back with the biggest stories in kindergarten.
