A VIP Itinerary for a Mature Couple — 12 Days in China at Your Pace

In the previous post I explained why China is perfect for older travelers. Now let's get practical — what a real itinerary, properly planned for a mature couple, actually looks like.
This isn't a theoretical itinerary. It's the skeleton I build on for couples who want to see the great China — but calmly, in comfort, without feeling they're running a marathon. Notice the principle that recurs every day: one active morning, a relaxed afternoon. Never two "heavy days" in a row.
Beijing — Days 1 to 4
We open in the capital, but without the shock. The first day is deliberately calm.
- Day 1: arrival, settling into a central hotel, a relaxed evening and adjusting to the jet lag. No pressure.
- Day 2: the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square in the morning. In the afternoon — rest or a gentle stroll in the nearby park.
- Day 3: the Great Wall at the Mutianyu section, with a cable car up and down — no exhausting climbs. Back early to rest.
- Day 4: the Temple of Heaven and the hutongs by rickshaw. A free evening, perhaps an acrobatics show.
Xi'an — Days 5 to 6
Travel by high-speed train (not a flight!) — comfortable, spacious, with a view. Xi'an is compact and perfect for a relaxed pace.
- Day 5: the Terracotta Army in the morning, one of the great sights in the world. Rest in the afternoon.
- Day 6: the ancient city wall (you can take an electric cart instead of cycling), and the Muslim Quarter for a pleasant evening of food and color.
Guilin and Yangshuo — Days 7 to 9
Here the pace slows further, and the soul rests. This is the part couples fall in love with.
- Day 7: a short flight to Guilin, a relaxed settling in.
- Day 8: a leisurely cruise on the Li River between the limestone peaks — one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, with no physical effort at all.
- Day 9: Yangshuo — a gentle tour of the villages, pastoral scenery, perhaps an evening light-and-sound show on the water.
The beauty of a good itinerary isn't what you cram into it — it's what you leave out, so there's truly time to live the moments.
Shanghai — Days 10 to 12
We close in the modern, glittering city — a perfect contrast to the nature and the history.
- Day 10: a flight or high-speed train to Shanghai. An evening on the Bund with the lit skyline view.
- Day 11: the old city and gardens in the morning, a calm river cruise, and time for shopping or coffee.
- Day 12: a free morning, a wrap-up, and departure for the flight home with a full heart.
What makes it VIP
It's not just a list of attractions. The difference is in the details that remove every friction:
- A private driver — no hunting for taxis, no dragging suitcases, no navigating
- Central, high-quality hotels — that cut down on travel and guarantee comfort
- A guide who speaks the language — translating, explaining, and arranging everything in the background
- A flexible pace — if a day was tiring, we adjust the next one
- Tailored food — selected restaurants, including options for the Western palate
And a few words about budget
An itinerary like this isn't the cheapest — but it gives real value. Instead of spending the trip on logistics, stress and mediocre choices, you get 12 smooth days in which all that's left for you to do is enjoy. At an age where time is precious and comfort matters — it's an investment worth every penny.
This is, of course, a general skeleton. Every couple is different — some love more culture, some prefer more nature, and some want a completely different pace. The real itinerary is built together, tailored exactly to you.
