Guilin, Yangshuo and the Rice Terraces — China's Gentle Side

Guilin, Yangshuo and the Rice Terraces — China's Gentle Side

There's a landscape in China you've probably already seen, even if you don't know it. Green limestone peaks rising out of the mist along a quiet river. That's Guilin — and it's even printed on the 20-yuan note.

If the Classic Triangle (Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai) is the China of cities, this region in the south is the China of the soul. Calm, green, and wildly photogenic. That's why I send almost every family here who's looking for a balance between the history and the cities and something that soothes the heart.

Here are the three places that make the region, and why each one is worth it.

Guilin and the Li River cruise

Guilin itself is a pleasant, easygoing city, but the real star is the trip out of it — a cruise on the Li River, one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the world.

For a few hours you drift between hundreds of limestone peaks rising on both banks, small villages, and fishermen on bamboo rafts with trained cormorants. It's not a view — it's a Chinese painting come to life.

The cruise ends in Yangshuo, perfectly connecting the two stops.

Yangshuo — the region's beating heart

Yangshuo is a small, charming town surrounded by those same limestone peaks, and it's the perfect base to settle into for a few days. The pace here is slow, the atmosphere relaxed, and that's exactly what kids and parents need after the cities.

Yangshuo is the place where people plan two days and stay four.

The Longji Rice Terraces — the "Dragon's Backbone"

A drive from Guilin lie the Longji Rice Terraces, known as the "Dragon's Backbone". Endless staircases of green rice fields climbing up the mountains, shaped by hand centuries ago.

It's one of the most impressive sights in China, and especially beautiful in certain seasons when the fields are full of water and reflect the light like mirrors. The area is also home to ethnic minorities with a unique culture — a human layer that enriches the visit.

The Classic Triangle gives you the story of China. This region lets you breathe it.

Why it works so well — for every type of traveler

How to combine it and how many days

This region fits beautifully as an addition to the Classic Triangle — after the cities, a soft landing in nature. Plan 3–4 days: a day or two in Yangshuo (including the Li River cruise), and a day for the rice terraces.

You can also build a whole, more relaxed trip around it, especially for those seeking pastoral China rather than the mega-cities.

In the next post I'll get into a completely different, dramatic region — Zhangjiajie, the "Avatar mountains", with its stone pillars and glass bridges.
